Ode To JC Pencils 01

Description

The "JC" in this case refers to Jackie Chan. It may be true that most of Chan's filmography doesn't hold much water in the plot department, but where the man really earns his keep is in choreographing and pulling off some of (if not the) most incredible and exciting action sequences ever caught on film without the use of CG or other post-production enhancements. If you don't consider yourself a fan of the man and the only Jackie Chan movies you've ever seen are Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon, you need to be schooled on the subject. My suggestions for where to start your re-education are the original Drunken Master and the first installment of the Police Story franchise.

Having recently filled my Netflix queue with a menagerie of Chan films, many of which I'd seen before, as well as several that I hadn't, I found myself inspired to attempt to construct a fight scene in my chosen medium: narrative art. I wasn't really intending to do much with these pages aside from sketching out some fun little action beats (hence the reason that I drew them on copy paper instead of bristol, which I now regret), but as I got further into the exercise I was enjoying myself so much that I decided to quickly ink the pages and toss on some quick gray tones. There are no backgrounds to speak of because I didn't begin this project with any real intention of showing it, which is the same reason that I didn't make a strong attempt at getting Jackie's likeness down. I wasn't so much trying to draw him as I was drawing an archetype of him.

All in all, I like to think of these pages as an extended sketch that I just did to have a little fun, which I did indeed.
