In December 2012 my homies *JoelLolar
, and I decided to post some sketch cards on the Stock*Pile Workblog ( stockpilecomics.tumblr.com
) based on our favorite movies of the year. This is one of mine. Here's what I wrote about it at the time:
Ah, a full week late. That’s the good old Rian we all know and love.
I’d originally drawn an Avengers card and, despite how much it sucked, I kept on noodling with it and telling myself that it would turn out okay in the end. After spending way too much time on it and remaining completely unhappy with the results, I scrapped that shit and drew this instead.
Dredd was fucking awesome. Way more fucking awesome than it had any right to be, but fucking awesome nonetheless.
Anyway, I snagged a bunch of photos of Karl Urban in his Judge Dredd get-up off of Google so that I could try to draw his uniform as accurately as possible. Let me tell you something: until you try to replicate all of the little details of Dredd’s uniform in the new movie, you have NO IDEA how complex it is! Tiny details like that are my bread and butter, but thanks to how intricate everything is and how anal retentive I am, this tiny little 2.5x3.5" drawing took me 3 hours to pencil and ink. I also ended up at that point where I’ve drawn a billion little nooks and crannies in an image before deciding that I should moody-it-up with some solid black shadows, but by the time I’ve spent so long on all of the details, I can never bring myself to cover them up with shading. Hence, this drawing is very flat.
It also doesn’t help that I pretty much only put flat colors on it. In fact, I spent far more time on the text in Photoshop than I did on the actual drawing. Oh, and speaking of the text, this phrase might be my favorite line from any movie this year. I love how subtle the use of the line “I am the law" is in this Dredd film. It’s not even it’s own statement. It’s part of another sentence. That’s why I put it on my card. It’s just too…*ahem*…fucking awesome.
This week’s sketch card brought to you by my XS (eXtra Small) Pitt Pen.
